John 5:6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”
Of course! Or is Jesus asking this man something even deeper and more crucial? The sick man has been sitting near the pool every day for thirty-eight years, with no one to help him into the water. Has he not asked? Has he been refused help or has he given up? Has he become so accustomed to his situation that it is all too easy to assume no one will help him?
Do we want to be made well? Sometimes it is easier to be comfortable with my weaknesses, to wallow in self-pity, assuming I’m too old, too tired, or too lacking in whatever strengths are required for a particular challenge.
Do I want to be made well? I hope so.
MOVING FORWARD: What would being made well look like in your life? Do you want to be made well?
