SATURDAY, March 20                   Cuthbert

John 6:68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

In today’s readings, we find different writers describing God’s words. In John’s Gospel, we hear an affirmation that Jesus spoke words of life. In Psalm 33, we hear that God’s word created the universe. What does it mean to have words of life?

Countless writers have committed words to the page and to people’s hearts. Words have been used to build up communities but also to exclude others and even to start wars (or crusades). But nobody can claim to speak words of eternal life or words that create our universe. As we follow Jesus, we should start asking: how can we get closer to speaking words of eternal life?

Unlike many wise people over the ages, Jesus not only taught, but he also acted. He spoke about healing, and he healed people. He spoke about tearing down walls, and he did just that. Jesus spoke words that brought life, and we need to hear them.

MOVING FORWARD: Share some healing words with someone in need.
