TUESDAY, April 20

1 John 4:9 God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.

I live near the county jail, and I often pass it on walks with our dog. Not long ago, I noticed some children using chalk to draw a message on the sidewalk. They wrote a man’s name and then, “We love you, daddy.” He could see this from his cell, I’m sure. The scene was equal parts heartwarming and heart-wrenching. The chalk drawing was a concrete sign of love.

What struck me is that these kids didn’t just have feelings of love, but they made their love real through action. So it is with Christian love and with God’s love for us. In Jesus Christ, the fullness of God’s love for us is revealed. It is sacrificial, generous, expansive, and transformational. Jesus is a concrete sign of God the Father’s love for us.

We love one another not to get on God’s good side but in thanksgiving for God’s gracious love for us. Let us be signs of love for others, for God has loved us first.

MOVING FORWARD: What chalk message might you write for someone you love? Send it to them by email, text, a letter, words, or even chalk.
