THURSDAY, June 20

Luke 21:2 [Jesus] also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins.

Jesus is not pulling punches when he denounces the ostentation of the scribes in the temple, and then graciously acknowledges the widow’s offering. No one greets this little old lady with respect in the marketplace. When she prays, she does not use fancy flowery language. But Jesus singles her out as an example of faith and sacrificial giving. Two thousand years later, we know the essence of this woman’s faith even though we don’t know her name.

Jesus says that what matters most is being authentic and having authentic relationships with God. This widow woman understands authenticity. Her relationship with God is as real as roses, and she places everything she has in the treasury because of this. Her authenticity is the reason Jesus stops and singles her out as an example of how we are to give. God willing, may we too learn to love, live, and give so boldly.

MOVING FORWARD: What’s the riskiest offering you’ve ever made? How did things work out for you?
