FRIDAY, September 20                  Ember Day

Psalm 69:1 Save me, O God, for the waters have risen up to my neck.

On a fishing trip several years ago, I decided to cross a stream to retrieve a snagged lure. What had appeared a benevolent stream was a deceptively fast-running torrent—I feared my waders would be swamped. I knew if that happened, I would be pulled down and out to sea. What a stupid way to die, I thought. This prayer from the psalms immediately came to mind!

How often do we imperil ourselves through the pursuit of ultimately worthless rewards? I risked my life for a $4 piece of plastic. Afterward, I asked myself a hard question: How often have I also risked my soul for things equally worthless?

MOVING FORWARD: When have apparently harmless choices turned out to be unwise? How did you learn to keep your eyes and heart open to wisdom?
