MONDAY, October 21

1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”

I always wonder about the adages that say the company you keep reflects who you are. A saying in Spanish cautions, “Tell me who you hang out with, and I will tell you who you are.” I wonder why the sayings don’t suggest that those of us who consider ourselves to be “good” companies can also influence others.

Yes, there may be such a thing as undesirable company, but what is the basis for such thinking? Who decides who is bad company?

Instead of trying to dictate what makes someone else bad company, we can try to be good company—good companions, listeners, and encouragers. Good company is positive, honest, loving, helpful, nonjudgmental, patient, and willing to listen. Good company is committed to a reciprocal relationship of trust and compassion. That’s the type of company I strive to be for others—and seek for myself.

MOVING FORWARD: How will you try to be “good company” today?
