Matthew 18:6 If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were fastened around your neck and you were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Our verse from Matthew makes me think of words from the ordination liturgy in the 1928 edition of The Book of Common Prayer: “And if it shall happen that the…Church, or any Member thereof, do take any hurt or hindrance by reason of your negligence, ye know the greatness of the fault, and also the horrible punishment that will ensue.”

I do not wish to harm or offend anyone I meet in the course of my life and ministry. I also know that, despite my best intentions, I have indeed caused harm. Casual, off-the-cuff remarks that I don’t really put any thought into or a snappy growl in a moment of high emotional intensity are solely my responsibility. I rejoice that forgiveness abounds.

MOVING FORWARD: Has your tongue gone out ahead of your heart and unintentionally hurt someone? Apologize to the person, to God, and to yourself.
