SATURDAY, March 21                           Thomas Ken

1 Corinthians 10:10 And do not complain as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.

Thomas Ken was born in 1637 in Berkhampsted, Hertfordshire, England—the same village where my grandmother grew up. Ken was an Anglican bishop, royal chaplain to King Charles II of England, and one of seven bishops who opposed James II’s Declaration of Indulgence. After the petition of opposition was published, the dissenting bishops were imprisoned in the Tower of London, tried for sedition, and subsequently acquitted. Ken refused to swear allegiance to William and Mary and was deprived of his office in 1691.

Ken wrote the hymn “Awake, My Soul, and With The Sun” in 1695: The doxology that ends the hymn probably sounds very familiar to most of us.

Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

MOVING FORWARD: Sing the doxology!
