1 Samuel 3:11 Then the Lord said to Samuel, “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears it tingle.”
I have a friend who, when involved in a conversation, always listens first. He waits, listens, observes—and when he does speak, it is almost always something worth saying. This ability to listen is a beautiful attribute and one I need to cultivate more in my own life.
The Holy Spirit calls us constantly, however we tend to be too occupied with the sound of our own voices to hear such a gentle whisper. Eli’s instruction to Samuel is to simply come to terms with the fact that God is calling him. The kind old priest tells Samuel to just listen. Most of us spend so much time and energy trying to control the conversation when what we really need to do is follow Eli’s advice to listen to what the Lord is saying.
