WEDNESDAY, August 21

Psalm 119:145 I call with my whole heart; answer me, O Lord, that I may keep your statutes.

One of the beautiful things about the Daily Office Lectionary and its guide to reading through scripture is the opportunity to read the psalms in quantity. Reading them this way is a bit like reading an epic, generational novel. The whole human experience is there: longing, rage, despair, praise, death, birth, love, hate, war, and peace…all of it.

When I need help expressing the depths of despair or the heights of joy, I can find the perfect words here. During times when I am angry or feel persecuted, I am comforted that the psalmist has been there before me. When I have hostile thoughts that I am reluctant to call “prayer,” I go to the psalms and find the words. Given that this poetry is thousands of years old, it appears God can handle all my feelings. For this I am grateful.

God does not need our dressed-up selves or our churchy prose. God wants our real-life, honest, and unfiltered selves. The God who made us knows us and loves us fully.

MOVING FORWARD: On each day of the next week, pick a number from 1 to 150 and read the correlating psalm. (If you get one of the really long ones, read it over two days!)
