SATURDAY, September 21
Saint Matthew, Evangelist and Ember Day

Matthew 9:10 And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples.

Once upon a time, two downtown churches in a large urban center each had a ministry with unhoused individuals. At the first church, participants were invited into a space that had been converted for this ministry. Church members and volunteers served food from behind a counter. Worship consisted of reading prepared remarks to an unresponsive audience.

In the other parish, participants were invited to worship in the sanctuary and offer their own prayers. Singing was encouraged by leaders and plenty of songbooks—sometimes led by an ad hoc children’s choir. After worship, everyone trooped into the parish hall, where clergy and lay leaders sat with participants around tables. Food was served family style. Nourishment of the body was accompanied by conversation, laughter, and occasional tears.

Which event most closely resembles Jesus’ dinner with tax collectors and sinners?

MOVING FORWARD: Does your congregation have an outreach to unhoused people in your city or town? How will you support it?
