WEDNESDAY, January 22
Vincent of Saragossa

Psalm 119:33-34 Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes, and I shall keep it to the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep your law; I shall keep it with all my heart.

Growing up the son of a policeman, I learned to love the law. That’s appropriate. But unfortunately, I came to look down on those who had fallen outside the law. Once outside, I reasoned, there’s no way back in.

It wasn’t until later, through some great lessons in humility and loss that God really taught me to love the Law. God’s Law in Christ is summed up in love. God has grace enough for us all and calls us to be gracious with each other.

Justice is part of love, and we must hold each other accountable. But we must not harden our hearts. God calls us to love our enemies, to love extravagantly and blindly. When we follow that law first and foremost, all else begins to fall into the way of God’s order. And even when we fail, there’s always a way back in with God’s Law of love.

MOVING FORWARD: What law or laws do you struggle to follow? What can you learn about your faith in that struggle?
