FRIDAY, January 22                  Vincent of Saragossa

Mark 4:39 [Jesus] woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm.

The first time I saw the Sea of Galilee with my own eyes, I remember thinking, “This is nothing more than a big lake!” I began to wonder about stories like this one from Mark, where great gales are reported.

I remember sitting at sunset by the sea, peaceful and serene. Then, I woke up the next morning to see a body of water I hardly recognized. Waves towered and roared.

Being a boater, I know the weather and bodies of water can change quickly and without much warning—this is how life is, too. And the point Jesus makes in this story, on that water, on that day, is the same lesson. And Jesus is with you always—in the calm and the storm.

MOVING FORWARD: Using your favorite search engine or reference book, find some maps and pictures of the Sea of Galilee in good weather and bad. Reflect upon them during your quiet time this weekend.
