Psalm 95:7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!
But sheep are not very bright, requiring careful supervision by shepherds and sheepdogs. When we recite Psalm 95, we compare ourselves with easily frightened and confused animals who follow the wrong leader into danger or wander off from the safety of the flock. We are stupid, stinky sheep.
Our culture promotes self-reliance, which makes it difficult to admit we are part of a flock that needs shepherding. But here in the middle of singing to the Lord, we are confessing our utter dependence upon our Shepherd, the one who searches for each of us till we are found and brought safely home.
MOVING FORWARD: Pray along with Psalm 95 today.
