THURSDAY, April 22          [Hadewijch of Brabant]

Luke 5:11 When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.

Can you imagine? What would it be like to leave everything and follow Jesus? It was no easier for first-century Galileans than it would be for us today. Jesus must have been so compelling that those disciples were willing to do something we would probably call crazy.

I have trouble thinking about what it must have been like for those followers of Jesus. I’m usually very careful, weighing things out with caution and intention. I pray for a while. I talk with my spouse and friends. New directions aren’t to be taken lightly! Just one time in my life, I received a job offer from someone I thoroughly respected at a world-renowned place I never imagined I’d get to work. Immediately, I said yes, and then told others. In the scheme of things, even that was a pretty safe move.

Would I do the same if Jesus called me to a radical new way or a totally different direction tomorrow? I’d like to think I would. Perhaps Jesus equips his followers with the strength and courage to do his will, just as he promises.

MOVING FORWARD: How can you inject space for some spontaneity in your life of faith?
