FRIDAY, May 22                  Helena of Constantinople

1 Samuel 2:8a He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor.

God shows up in the hair salon—on the faces of customers and in the hands of the stylists. A remarkable ministry in Houston, Texas, offers free haircuts to homeless people, hospice patients, and anyone else who needs a gentle, healing touch.

The ministry, Have Shears Will Travel, is a post-modern twist on this passage about wiping ashes from the faces of the needy, with founder Barbara Goodson committed to living out the poetry found in the Song of Hannah. From humble beginnings in 2015, this ministry now operates a mobile hair salon, providing 8,000 free haircuts a year and working to bring the kingdom of God to everyone they meet.

People living on the streets or transitioning from prison, recovering from addictions, or facing death in hospice centers are raised up and given a seat of honor, treated with respect and dignity—loved with a love that knows no bounds.

MOVING FORWARD: Do some research to see how you can support similar ministries in your community.
