MONDAY, June 22                           Alban

Matthew 19:21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”

Twice in my life, I have made the pilgrimage to St. Alban’s Cathedral in England for the feast of their patron saint. Alban was the first English martyr killed for harboring a priest fleeing the Romans. There is a cost to following Jesus.

But here’s the thing—Alban gave everything gladly. The story isn’t one of dread but of joy. Even the modern celebration of his life is filled with joy—a parade through the city square leading to the steps of the cathedral, where a giant puppet of St. Alban is beheaded. There are streamers, and music resonates through the city. Children cheer for Alban!

What is the cost of being a Christian in your life? A man comes to Jesus and asks how he can be saved, and Jesus replies that the man should give up everything and follow him. That is a steep cost, but it is one demanded of us also.

MOVING FORWARD: What do you know about Saint Alban? Do a little sleuthing about this joyful saint today.
