WEDNESDAY, January 23

Mark 4:14 The sower sows the word.

I set out one morning determined to sow some wildflower seeds at the edge of a wooded area in our backyard. Years of untamed roots and vines prevented easy access to my preferred spot. I hacked away, making a small bed and amending it with store-bought soil. Surely the seeds would sprout, but would they survive when the brambles inevitably re-invaded? I planted them anyway.

God’s heart must be so grateful to farmer-evangelists who plant seeds where life and hope are threatened—in desolate, ignored places, assumed to be barren, or in the tender, freshly tilled soil of teenage hearts where seeds sprout joyfully and then weather storms of peer pressure and confusing messages from a vapid society.

The parable of the sower yields lessons for us: Growing in faith takes effort to overcome worldly and evil forces. Thanks be to God for the farmers who keep sowing in love, valuing each seed as worthy of God’s power and saving grace.

MOVING FORWARD: Head to your local home-improvement store and pick out seeds for a spring garden!
