WEDNESDAY, October 23
Saint James of Jerusalem

Matthew 13:55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?

I occasionally struggle with feeling inferior—like I do not belong in certain places because I do not have the right credentials or the right last name. When I first started leading music and singing around the Episcopal Church, I felt intimidated because I am not classically trained and do not know how to sight-read music.

I remember feeling like all eyes were on me in my first meeting of the Standing Commission of Liturgy and Music. If felt like everyone understood Anglican chant except for me. I remember feeling embarrassed when I said that because my church was Spanish-speaking and I was an ex-evangelical, I did not know any of the hymns.

I am grateful God doesn’t wonder about my credentials or abilities and has put people in my life who celebrate the gifts God has given me—and who will join me in song when I lead.

MOVING FORWARD: Have you ever felt inferior or unqualified? Who relieved your nerves and doubts?
