TUESDAY, November 23         Clement of Rome

Matthew 19:21-22 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

How many of us can give away all of our possessions and money to follow Jesus today? We can go down the path of the prosperity gospel, or we can allegorize such passages or gloss over them by saying that what Jesus really meant was this, that, and the other. Surely Jesus doesn’t want us to give up everything. Right?

I have come to know some brothers who are members of a monastic community. When they join the community, they are required to give away all of their possessions. Once, they told me that they owned some property in a large city where some of the brothers resided. At some point, they closed the house, sold it, and used the proceeds from the sale to purchase Bibles, which they then shipped to Asia. Sounds so simple.

Today I am simplifying my life by letting go of possessions. It’s not easy.

MOVING FORWARD: What do you need to let go of so you can follow Christ?
