SUNDAY, December 23         4 Advent

Luke 1:45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.

Today’s reading is so singular. Nothing else like this has happened before and will never happen again. I struggle to find myself in this story, to try and fit myself inside of Mary’s or Elizabeth’s experience.

Then I remember the women I know—women who have formed me, who mother and sister me, who teach me to pray and to love Jesus. We stand beside each other when we say big yeses in this life. I think about the songs we sing together and to each other, about the hope that always rises even when the bills or the new baby or the taxes or the favors come due. We understand the strange closeness of birth, life, and death in ways we cannot explain, articulated by the spirit that leaps within us when joy calls out to joy, when what is lowly is lifted up, when we are full, when what has been wrong is made right. Blessed are we among women.

MOVING FORWARD: Pray along with the Magnificat in today’s gospel reading.
