TUESDAY, February 23                  Polycarp of Smyrna

Hebrews 3:4 For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.

For thirty years, I was married to a home builder who smoothed concrete, swung a hammer, and raised walls. We used to laugh when friends said they were “building a house” when they really meant signing a contract and picking out paint, tile, and carpet for a home built by someone like my husband.

The concept of the “self-made” person is similar. People make choices in their lives about what career to pursue, whether to attend college, and how much time to spend studying. But the basic materials—intellect, health, raw talent, family support, interest, and curiosity—are gifts from God. We cooperate with God in building our lives, but the materials are provided by God, the builder of all things.

MOVING FORWARD: Make a donation today to an organization that is helping to build the kingdom of God.
