FRIDAY, April 23                    [Toyohiko Kagawa]

Psalm 105:1 Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his Name; make known his deeds among the peoples.

This psalm starts with raucous praise, and what follows is a recitation of God’s mighty deeds from the past. As we pray the psalm, we remember Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We recall Moses and Aaron. And we retell many of the ways God dealt graciously with his people and harshly with his enemies. The point of this salvation history hymn is to assure us that God will care for us now, for God has always cared for God’s own people.

As I write this, the news is filled with one calamity after another. I have no reason to think God is sending plagues and disasters upon us, but this ancient psalm is still exceedingly relevant. God has always cared for us. God will always care for us. We are never outside God’s story of redemption and mercy.

To say that God is with us through difficulty is not to deny the gravity of those challenges we face. After all, it wasn’t easy for God’s people in the wilderness. Rather, we can be confident that God will always be faithful to us. I pray that I am always faithful to God.

MOVING FORWARD: Pray for faithfulness, even in hard times.
