SUNDAY, May 23                           Pentecost

Acts 2:4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

We are doubtful creations. We need proof of everything, and even when provided with the proof, we often are fickle and decide we don’t like that proof.

The explosion of languages in Acts is significantly more complicated than other miracles in the Bible, in part because it happens to so many people. Rather than the miracle of one child healed, this is a crowd of different nations speaking one another’s languages and understanding every word. This is impossible without the hand of God.

In movements such as Black Lives Matter, climate change, and gender equality, we must speak in languages of respect, help, listening, and love, so that we hear each other over others who may doubt. Just as God proved through the Holy Spirit’s flaming tongues that anyone who followed and preached God’s word would be saved, we too can save one another in earthly ways.

MOVING FORWARD: What languages can you speak or learn to live more fully into the Spirit?
