Matthew 19:30 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.
Remember the stories: When God chooses Abraham to become a great nation, he and Sarah are far too old to conceive a child. And Hannah, who has been barren, cries out in joy as she gives her son to God. And later, God reminds her son, Samuel, “The Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
Centuries later, Mary, pregnant with Jesus, declares, “[God] has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly.” And Jesus himself assures us that the “first will be last, and the last will be first.” Humility is part of our faith. And it’s a better posture for the soul than pride.
