Luke 6:36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

One day after my fourth-grade flag football practice, Dad made a comment that stuck with me. “This family isn’t known for being good at sports.” He wasn’t saying it to be mean, but it was a hard comment to shake. I couldn’t help but wonder, “If I don’t come from an athletic family, how can I be an athlete?”

So, I went on to dabble in a few other sports. While I enjoyed participating, I never really succeeded in any of them. I wonder if I stopped trying in fourth grade.

What we believe about our families is a powerful thing. It can shape who we become or don’t become.

What we believe about God is just as pivotal.

If we believe God is out to get us, we will reflect that belief in our daily choices. If we believe God is full of mercy, we might just stand a chance of being merciful to ourselves and others.

MOVING FORWARD: What are the most important things you believe about God, yourself, and your family?
