John 17:1a After Jesus had spoken these words, he looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come.”
In a Forward Day by Day meditation a few years ago, a bishop wrote about how he likes to open his eyes during prayer, letting the images around him shape his words. Every once in a while, I use this approach and find something powerful about listening with my eyes open and seeing others pray.
How might our prayers change if we looked to heaven in our conversations with God? Perhaps the lesson here is that we’re invited to pray in all different ways, understanding that it’s not the posture of our prayer but the condition of our heart that matters to God.
MOVING FORWARD: Try praying in different positions today. How do these physical differences impact your prayers?
