SUNDAY, June 24     5 Pentecost

Mark 4:38 But [Jesus] was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

The young mother’s words pierced my heart: “Why did God let this happen?” Her toddler was near death, and the doctors were at a loss as to how to help. It seemed like God was asleep at the wheel, and I felt helpless. All I could do was watch and wait and weep with her.

Matthew tells us that Jesus wakes up in the nick of time and saves the day. He calms the storm and eases the disciples’ anxiety. In moments of grave danger and distress, this is the outcome we all hope for—for Jesus to appear and make things right, immediately. But sooner or later, we learn the cold reality that this is not always so.

One of the most scandalous lies ever told in the name of God is that bad things don’t happen to good people. They do, and this is an awful reality to accept. These are the moments when simply saying that God’s love will conquer death and hell is not enough. We have to believe it enough to watch and wait and weep for it.

MOVING FORWARD: Have you experienced a time when your prayers seemed to go unanswered? Have you talked to God about this?
