MONDAY, June 24
Nativity of John the Baptist

Luke 1:80 The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel.

The readings today revolve around John the Baptist. We can read these passages and think only of John, or we can broaden our view that we too have been called to spread the news of Jesus’ coming. That’s what we are charged to do as Christians—to “go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people.”

There is no mistaking the fact that John the Baptist has a special place in the story, but he represents all of us. For John, the message is always about Jesus—always about the kingdom. He knows he is just a messenger who is “not worthy to untie the thong of the sandals on [Jesus’] feet.” Like John, we should always understand the person of Jesus with the mindset, He must increase, but I must decrease.

MOVING FORWARD: Who reminds you of John the Baptist? Share a word of thanks with them.
