WEDNESDAY, June 24                  The Nativity of John the Baptist

Luke 1:76-77 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins.

When we see the words, “And you, child,” at the beginning of Luke’s Gospel, it would be easy to think of Jesus, born just ten verses later. But this verse refers to John the Baptist and his ministry.

“Giving knowledge of salvation” is John’s prayer, and it is also ours. This is one of the verses that I pray every morning during Morning Prayer and feel convicted by it. God has called me and you to tell the Good News of Jesus.

We are called to tell our stories of faith and transformation to everyone we know. Our sins have been forgiven. You and I are free to love and to be loved, to be joyful and to spread joy. “The dawn from on high [has broken] upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death.” We must not keep it to ourselves.

MOVING FORWARD: Find someone this week who needs to hear the Good News and tell them your story of faith. Be vulnerable, and tell them why you love Jesus.
