FRIDAY, October 25

1 Corinthians 16:13 Keep alert, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong.

For my whole life, people have told me that I have been given a variety of challenges because I am strong. People have said or done ridiculous things to me because I am strong, and they know I can handle it. This is exhausting. Just like anyone else, I want to curl up under the covers and hide on some days.

As a woman of color and a survivor of domestic violence and sexual abuse, I have had to stand firm and strong even when I was inwardly crumbling with fear. I am grateful for the strong foundation my parents gave me. Their love, example, and faith sustained me when I thought I was going to lose my mind and life.

All the things I experienced (by choice and by chance) have helped me help others. At forty-nine years old, I still need the courage to speak up, especially when nobody is standing with me. If you see someone strong, it is usually because they have been through hell. Encourage them—and thank them when they speak up.

MOVING FORWARD: Think of a strong friend—and then offer to carry that person’s burden for a bit.
