MONDAY, February 25
Saint Matthias, Apostle (tr)

Acts 1:26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.

The number twelve is important. The children of Israel are organized into twelve tribes. Jesus symbolically chooses twelve of his disciples to become the pillars in an emerging community of faith, but now only eleven are left. So the disciples find a few qualified people and roll the dice. The lot falls on Matthias. And then, we don’t hear much more about him.

In the calling of Matthias, we are reminded of something important: We never know what role God has prepared for us. But when we focus on becoming the type of person God wants us to be and let God worry about how to best use us, communities can be made whole and the gospel preached to those far and near.

MOVING FORWARD: Urim and Thumim were the stones used to cast lots by the high priests in the temple. Do some research on these tools today.
