THURSDAY, March 25         The Annunciation

Luke 1:52 He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly.

Today, we remember the Annunciation, the day when the angel Gabriel visited Mary. After this visitation, Mary sings out her joy.

Mary lives under structures intended to keep her as a second-class citizen. She is from a town that is not well-regarded. And as a woman, she faces expectations about her place in society. But God lifts her up.

God breaks down every barrier that we build. When we create structures to put others down—racism, classism, sexism—and to make ourselves feel more powerful, God comes in to destroy them. Even in our own lives, we often create barriers against ourselves, downplaying our talents and gifts because they do not fit into societal norms or preferences.

God calls us to break down those barriers so that we, like Mary, can become messengers of the Good News in the world.

MOVING FORWARD: Research the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa after the end of apartheid. What can we learn from their work about restorative justice?
