MONDAY, June 25     Nativity of John the Baptist (tr)

Luke 1:66 All who heard them pondered them and said, “What then will this child become?” For, indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him.

Scripture tells us that John the Baptist is born a half year before his cousin Jesus, so we celebrate John’s nativity six months prior to Christmas. John the Baptist seems to hold little in common with most of us. I don’t know many people who live in the woods, eating locusts and other insects, only to emerge as a prophet and amass enough of a following to be thrown in jail and eventually executed! And yet, there is something profound in how John lives his life. Even amidst his eccentricities, he spends his entire life pointing beyond himself to Jesus.

Following Jesus means patterning our lives in such a way that everything we do points toward him. In the Episcopal tradition, candidates for baptism promise to seek and serve Christ in all people, to love their neighbors as themselves, and to respect the dignity of every human being. With Blessed John as our forerunner, may we too so pattern our lives that they would point others to Jesus.

MOVING FORWARD: Who pointed you toward Jesus with their actions and words? Thank that person today! Share your story of coming to faith by using #ForwardDayByDay.
