TUESDAY, June 25

Acts 5:39 “But if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them—in that case you may even be found fighting against God!” They were convinced by him.

Today’s story from Acts has so much wisdom packed into it. Gamaliel is a well-respected person among his community, and the disciples know him to be a fair man. Gamaliel doesn’t so much back up the story of the apostles as much as he admonishes those listening to give them a fair shake. The church has come to understand that the apostles’ message is clearly divinely inspired and as such, cannot be overthrown.

Here too, we find Peter standing before the council, a common fisherman with (likely) no formal education or social standing. He and his ragtag group of friends are stirring up Jerusalem and will eventually change the world with their stories about Jesus. There is absolutely no way they could gain any traction, much less become the church we know today, were God not at the heart of it.

MOVING FORWARD: When was the last time you saw God’s will make the impossible happen?
