SUNDAY, July 25                  9 Pentecost

Ephesians 3:20 Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine.

In 1806, a group of five Williams College students gathered to think about and pray for the spiritual needs of people around the world, particularly in Asian countries. They were meeting on a field in Massachusetts to pray when a sudden thunderstorm rolled in, forcing them to take shelter under a haystack. For the entire duration of the storm, they prayed for people they’d never met, for the love of Christ to somehow reach them.

Two years later, these men began a group called “The Brethren,” and soon after, they sent missionaries to the Indian subcontinent. Fifty years later, The Brethren had sent more than 1,250 missionaries; they translated the Bible from Greek and Hebrew to previously unwritten languages and built long-lasting educational systems. Today, more than 5,000 missionaries have shared the gospel in Asian countries—all because five college students believed that they were praying to a God who could accomplish abundantly more than all they could ask for or imagine.
