SUNDAY, August 25                           11 Pentecost

Luke 13:12 When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your ailment.”

Unlike some of us, Jesus does not discriminate. He offers healing and fellowship willy-nilly to all who come along and ask—and even to those who don’t ask for it.

Jesus’ decision to heal a woman on the Sabbath is one of many actions that keep getting him into trouble with the religious authorities. His mission is to shower the people with the love of God. Again and again, he teaches that people are more important than laws. Big picture-wise, Jesus works hard to subvert unjust systems and garbage attitudes.

That’s all well and good, but imagine the singular experience of healing within this woman who has been crippled for eighteen years. Without pause, Jesus sees her and heals her. Oh, the joy of being surprised by God—who knows what we need before we ask!

MOVING FORWARD: Take Jesus’ willy-nilly approach to sharing love and fellowship into your week.
