FRIDAY, September 25                  Sergius of Radonezh

Acts 19:27 And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be scorned, and she will be deprived of her majesty that brought all Asia and the world to worship her.

Sometimes, God offers me the opportunity to see things from a different perspective. I stopped kneeling to receive the eucharist. I had done this for years, harkening back to that beautiful Catholic response: “only say the word, and I shall be healed.” And then I got married, and my husband did not kneel.

I started to stand beside him, somewhat resentfully at first. But the symbol of the welcome table, the acknowledgment that I have been invited as friend not slave, proved to be a healing balm, a re-engagement with the holy meal that empowered me to invite others to join in. Standing or kneeling, I am grateful for the abundance of grace I receive in those moments worship and praise.

MOVING FORWARD: Where might you be holding on to “shrines in the temple” when God might be offering something new?
