FRIDAY, January 26

Psalm 40:1 I waited patiently upon the Lord; he stooped to me and heard my cry.

Our dog Pugsley is the most patient creature on Earth—and the most impatient. When we prepare a meal, Pugsley waits patiently at our feet for something to fall to the floor. He swallows everything, whether it’s good for him or not. If nothing falls from the kitchen counter, however, Pugsley will bark and lies flat on the floor, as if in prayerful supplication.

One night, Pugsley swallowed a large thumbtack that fell off the kitchen wall. Thank goodness for the emergency vet who heard his cry and saved his life. Pugsley also has food allergies. It’s up to my wife and me to protect him from the consequences that he can’t foresee or understand. We incline and hear his cry.

Pugsley is my four-legged alter ego. Sometimes I bark, trying to get God’s attention, waiting in hopeful faith while wishing God would get a move on. I have to remind myself to trust God. God knows what is best for me and hears me when I cry.

MOVING FORWARD: Consider donating money or supplies to a local animal shelter.
