FRIDAY, October 26

Ecclesiasticus 11:2-3 Do not praise individuals for their good looks, or loathe anyone because of appearance alone. The bee is small among flying creatures, but what it produces is the best of sweet things.

When Susan Boyle took the stage on the competition “Britain’s Got Talent” several years ago, many rolled their eyes, and some snickered. Even one of the judges did not hide his doubtful expression. The woman at the microphone was forty-eight years old, with frizzy brown hair and bushy eyebrows, and she was not rail-thin. People expected her to sound awkward and awful. But when she sang “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical “Les Misérables,” the eye rolling and snickering stopped. At the end of her performance, Susan received a standing ovation. She has gone on to have an amazing late-in-life career, including a command performance for Queen Elizabeth II.

Like the bee in our reading, Susan Boyle seemed insignificant to many people, but the sweetness she produced provided nourishment and added to the enjoyment of all who heard her sing. Her story is an object lesson about the deceptiveness of appearances, and a reminder that God has blessed everyone with sweet, unexpected gifts to be opened and shared.

MOVING FORWARD: Purchase some local honey this weekend. Enjoy the sweet treat with a cup of tea during your next prayer time. Save the bees!
