SATURDAY, October 26

Matthew 12:34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good things, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

Jesus’ challenge in this verse from Matthew is a pretty big one for me. His question echoes in my head and heart when I consider my own bad words—the judgy words I use when describing those I don’t understand. Why is he so mean to LGBTQI+ people? Why is she so judgmental? Why are they so different? Who is he to think he knows what God meant to say? When I say or think really ugly things, Jesus’ words pop into my mind, and I cringe.

Dear Jesus: Even when my thoughts are hard and heavy, let me choose to say only uplifting and encouraging words. Let me be intentional about what my mouth speaks as I ask you to fill my heart with your love. Amen.

MOVING FORWARD: Ask yourself these questions when you feel mean: What is abundant in my heart? How can my heart hold hateful and mean things when I call myself a follower of Jesus? How can I fill my heart with good?
