MONDAY, November 26

Luke 18:16 But Jesus called for them and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs."

I was once part of a new church plant—a young congregation that sometimes had as many children as adults on Sundays. We met in a single room of a community center, so there was no separate space for the children during the liturgy.

During morning worship, the children gathered in the front of the room on a big, fluffy quilt, off to one side of the altar. The adults in charge of formation provided coloring sheets, crayons, and age-appropriate materials to help the little ones stay engaged in the service. At the gospel reading, the children gathered around as scripture was read.

Our mornings were sometimes chaotic. But as a person who grew up in a church with very few children, I found their noises to be angelic choruses, a reminder that the kingdom of God was very near. Whether they are quiet or loud, the presence of children in worship gives life.

MOVING FORWARD: Find out how you can support your congregation’s outreach to new parents.
