1 Peter 1:13,15 Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed. Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct.
Peter, very likely writing to newly baptized Christian believers, tells them to become proficient through practice. And to what end? To the end of becoming holy, as God is holy.
Why should we desire holiness, which can strike some as stodgy and unappealing? But holiness is exactly what we’re made for—it’s how we share in the life of God and fulfill our destiny as human beings. To be sure, holiness is a gift of grace, but we can be disciplined in making ourselves open to embracing it.
