WEDNESDAY, December 26
Saint Stephen, Deacon and Martyr

Psalm 31:21 Blessed be the Lord! for he has shown me the wonders of his love in a besieged city.

Stephen lives in a besieged city, occupied by all sorts of powers and principalities. He knows this psalm—it’s probably committed to memory—and he has likely prayed it when he thinks about the prophets who have come before him. The honesty and rawness, bravery and faith, and the vulnerability and radical acceptance of God’s will ring with an aching beauty.

This psalm is unashamed in asking God the hard questions that bubble up in our hearts when we are besieged by the occupying forces in our own cities and in our own hearts and minds. It reminds us, as does the witness of our brother Stephen, that even in the face of death itself, God’s goodness is waiting to deliver us into love.

MOVING FORWARD: Who has shown you love when you’ve felt under siege? Find a way to thank that person.
