SATURDAY, December 26         Saint Stephen

Matthew 23:37b How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

In just two days, the lectionary has taken us from glad tidings flying from angels’ wings in Luke to wayward chicks being gathered under chickens’ wings in Matthew. Yesterday, Isaiah told us about the Prince of Peace and the establishment of the everlasting justice of God’s kingdom. Today, Jeremiah warns of hardheartedness and catastrophe and preaches repentance.

Rather than heavenly hosts proclaiming peace on earth, our story from Acts tells us about Stephen’s angelic face preaching the gospel of Jesus while staring a violent death in the eye. This hard and remarkable story seems like the rained-out parade to yesterday’s sunshine and blue skies in Titus.

The world changes every single day. But God’s love is changeless—it shows up every single day and calls us back to itself every moment. Life and love go on.

MOVING FORWARD: How has God’s changeless love shown up amid your significant changes and ordinary days? Share it with us by using #ForwardDayByDay.
