Ruth 1:16 But Ruth said, “Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you! Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God.”

The story of Ruth is one we need to hear today. We see virtue on display in Ruth, a Gentile refugee woman living the life of a widow in the ancient Near East. The love story we read about—not the one between Ruth and Boaz but one of family love—is centered on Ruth and Naomi. And in all of this, we see God preserve the children of Israel during a very dark period—an especially depressing time in Israel’s history.

As we read Ruth’s story in the coming days, we need to be reminded of these moments of grace and mercy. And as we face our own dark days, may we be encouraged that the same God who speaks mercy and grace into the world with Ruth’s life is ready to preserve us as well.

MOVING FORWARD: What is one of your favorite non-romantic love stories from your own family? Share it with #ForwardDayByDay.
