Joel 2:13 Rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the LORD, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing.
We live differently when we accept our mortality and shortcomings. By accepting these things about ourselves without shame or self-condemnation, we can also accept our sisters and brothers just as they are.
To hear the word that we are dust and to dust we shall return frees us from the prison of perfection. Lent invites us to graciously accept and acknowledge our manifold sins and weaknesses, to be nakedly honest before our Maker. When we are honest before God, we begin to experience and understand more deeply the salvation Jesus offers us with his love.
MOVING FORWARD: A Lenten discipline could simply be to journey with these two realities—our eventual death and our salvation through Jesus—throughout the forty days of Lent.
