Deuteronomy 10:12 So now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you? Only to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
It’s a pretty tall list. I mean, who has never walked away from God or served God half-heartedly or behaved selfishly? I have broken several commandments—and some, pretty regularly.
Fortunately for us, Jesus narrows the list to two requirements: love God and love your neighbor. And I believe effort counts. In our desire to meet these requirements, God is pleased, even when we fail.
I believe that by turning and returning to God, we make true what theologian Frederick Buechner said in Listening to Your Life: “The final secret, I think, is this: that the words ‘You shall love the Lord your God’ become in the end less a command than a promise.”
MOVING FORWARD: What are the only things Jesus asks of you?
