MONDAY, July 26                  Saint James, tr

Jeremiah 45:5a And you, do you seek great things for yourself?

I’ve noticed within myself a form of vanity that comes from doing “Christian” things: donating extra money to charity, knowing the names of the homeless people I buy meals for, going out of my way to help friends in need (especially if they are moving—that alone ought to be reason for sainthood!).

But Jesus asks his disciples—and us—for a kind of servant leadership that doesn’t keep such records. It’s hard to be selfless, harder still to be humble. Today we remember Saint James, one of the Sons of Thunder who went from desiring a place of honor next to Jesus in his kingdom to having his ministry cut short: James was the first of the apostles to be martyred. We don’t honor him because of the number of non-believers he brought to Christ, the number of churches he planted, or the books he wrote, but rather because he walked with and devoted his life to Jesus.

And what greater thing is there than that?

MOVING FORWARD: Do you keep score of your acts of charity and service? Do you think God does? Pray for discernment and humble devotion.
