MONDAY, August 26

1 Kings 1:14 [Nathan said to Bathsheba]: “Then, while you are still there speaking with the king, I will come in after you and confirm your words.”

Again, the daily readings are a festival of intrigue. Bathsheba and Nathan scheme against a pretender to David’s throne. Paul continues his self-defense arguments, this time in front of Agrippa. And in Mark’s Gospel, Jesus’ mood is positively apocalyptic.

One could make a case that if this is the good news, who needs it? These stories are full of really tough stuff, and we have to look hard to find the diamonds in the dust. A grittier, more faithful approach to knowing God struggles with the questions raised by difficult portions of scripture.

MOVING FORWARD: In what way are God’s purposes brought to fruition, even when we work against God? What single word or phrase or idea jumps out of these passages and shines a light into the dark corners of your life?
